Antilock brake system
El ABS (del alemán Antiblockiersystem, sistema de antibloqueo) es un mecanismo utilizado en los aviones y en los vehículos automóviles, que evita que los neumáticos pierdan el contacto con la pista de aterrizaje o la calzada durante un proceso de frenado brusco. El sistema fue desarrollado inicialmente para los aviones, los cuales acostumbran a tener que frenar fuertemente una vez han tomado tierra. Más adelante, Mercedes-Benz desarrolló este sistema por primera vez para automóviles. Con el tiempo el ABS se ha ido generalizando, de forma que en la actualidad la absoluta mayoría de los automóviles y camiones de fabricación reciente dispone de él. Algunas motos de alta cilindrada también llevan este sistema de frenado.
